Nerinx is a small, quiet community located in Marion County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of the larger county, rather than having its own separate city government.

Discovering Nerinx

Nerinx has a special history, especially because of the Sisters of Loretto. This community is home to their main convent, called the Motherhouse. A convent is a place where religious sisters live and work together.

How Nerinx Started

Nerinx was founded a long time ago, in the early 1800s. A priest named Father Stephen Theodore Badin helped start the community. He was an important figure in the early days of Kentucky.

The Sisters of Loretto

The Sisters of Loretto are a group of Catholic religious women. They moved to this area around the year 1820. They are known for their work in education and helping others. Their Motherhouse in Nerinx is a very important place for their order.

The Name of Nerinx

The community was first named Nerinckx. It was named after Father Charles Nerinckx. He was the person who founded the Sisters of Loretto order. Later, in 1899, a post office opened in the community. Over time, the spelling became shorter and simpler, changing to Nerinx, which is how it's known today.
