Nesospiza is a group of small, seed-eating birds. They belong to the tanager family, called Thraupidae. You can find these special birds only on the Tristan da Cunha islands. These islands are located far out in the South Atlantic Ocean.
Meet the Nesospiza Finches
The name Nesospiza was first used in 1873. A German bird expert named Jean Cabanis introduced it. He named the Inaccessible Island finch as the main example for this group.
The name Nesospiza comes from two old Greek words. Nēsos means "island," referring to the Tristan da Cunha islands. Spiza means "finch," which is a type of bird.
Today, there are three known types, or species, of Nesospiza finches. Each one is unique to these remote islands.
