The Nevada-California-Oregon Railroad Depot is an old train station built in 1910. It is located in Reno, Nevada. The building was constructed by a company called the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway, or NCO for short. This building is a special historical landmark. It is marked as Nevada Historical Marker number 210. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site in the United States. Today, this old train station is a restaurant and brewery called The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery.
About the Building
The depot is a two-story building made of brick. It has a mix of different design styles. The roof is flat and covered with red Spanish tiles. On the first floor, you will see rounded Roman arches. These arches are over the doors and windows. Lots of concrete was used in the building's design. You can see it in the corners and around the windows.
The depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places for a few reasons. First, it is important because of its connection to the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway. This railway helped Nevada grow. Second, the building has a unique and interesting design.
History of the Railroad
The Nevada and Oregon Railroad company started in Reno in June 1880. Their plan was to build a railway north to the Columbia River. This railway would help cattle ranches and farms. These farms were in northeastern California and eastern Oregon. The company decided to use "narrow-gauge" tracks. These tracks were cheaper to build than "standard gauge" tracks. This railway became one of the longest narrow-gauge railroads in the United States.
The railroad did very well until the mid-1910s. In 1917, the company sold all its property in Nevada. It sold everything to the Western Pacific Railroad (WP). The WP then changed the narrow-gauge tracks to standard gauge tracks. The depot continued to serve the people of Reno. It was used for passenger train service until 1937.
After 1937, there were no more passenger trains. However, the WP company still used the depot. They used it as offices until 1975. Then, the building was sold to private owners. These owners used it for different things over the years. The building was empty for several years. In 2014, it was fixed up a lot. It became the restaurant and microbrewery called The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery. This new business opened in 2015. The restaurant's design shows respect for the building's past. It includes old maps, drawings, and other items from the NCO and WP Railroads.
