The Nevada Indian Commission is a special group in Nevada. It is part of the state government. This group works to help American Indians who live in Nevada. They focus on making sure Native Americans have good lives and opportunities. The commission is led by an executive director. This person reports to the main commissioner and the governor of Nevada. The main office is in Carson City.

How the Commission Started

The Nevada Indian Commission began a long time ago, in 1965. It was first called the Indian Affairs Commission. In 1973, its name changed to the Nevada Indian Commission. When it started, the group was supposed to have seven members. At least three of these members had to be American Indian. In 1973, the number of members was changed to five. Now, only two of these five members can be non-Native American. The governor chooses these members. They usually serve for three years.

What the Commission Does

The commission runs many programs to help American Indians. It also looks after the Stewart Indian School Museum. This museum helps people learn about the history of the Stewart Indian School. There are also two important groups that work with the commission. These are the Stewart Advisory Committee and the Indian Education Advisory Committee. They help with advice on different topics.
