Nevado de Chañi is a tall mountain in the Andes mountain range. It is located in Jujuy Province, Argentina. This impressive peak stands about 5,949 meters (19,518 feet) high. It is found about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest of the city of San Salvador de Jujuy.

About Nevado de Chañi

Nevado de Chañi is a group of mountains found between certain lines of longitude and latitude. The main peak is the highest point in Jujuy Province. Its exact height has been a bit confusing over time. Old official maps from Argentina's military geographic institute once said it was 6,200 meters tall. However, this was an overestimation. More recent surveys suggest it is around 5,900 meters. Since the early 2000s, climbers using modern GPS devices have measured its height many times, confirming it to be 5,949 meters.

This mountain acts as a natural border between the provinces of Jujuy and Salta. The Nevado de Chañi group includes several other peaks that are over 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) high. These include Cerro Paño, which is 5,517 meters (18,099 feet) tall, and Nevado del Castillo, standing at 5,565 meters (18,258 feet). The very top of Nevado de Chañi is called Cumbre General Belgrano.

Climbing the Mountain

The easiest way to climb Nevado de Chañi is by its eastern side. This route is considered technically simple, meaning it doesn't require advanced climbing skills. However, the mountain's southern side offers much harder routes. These routes are on mixed ground, which means they involve both rock and ice climbing. They are known for being quite challenging.

Many climbers use the normal, easier route to reach the summit. But as of July 2007, only about 5 or 6 climbs had been recorded on the difficult southern face. The rocks of this mountain group are mostly made of a strong type of granite. This is quite unique for the northern part of Argentina. There are also several challenging climbing paths in the area that have not yet been attempted by climbers.
