Nevers Mumba was born in 1960 in Zambia. He is a Zambian politician and a religious minister. He served as the eighth Vice-President of Zambia from 2003 to 2004. He worked under President Levy Mwanawasa. Today, he is the leader of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy political party.
Growing Up and Starting Out
Nevers Mumba grew up in Chinsali, Zambia. He lived with his parents and 11 brothers and sisters. His home was very religious. His father, Sunday Mumba, was a teacher and a pastor. He was part of the United Church of Zambia.
Nevers Mumba went to Chinsali Basic School for his primary education. He did very well in his Grade 7 exams. This allowed him to go to Hillcrest Technical High School in Livingstone. While there, he joined the Zambia Combined Cadet Force (ZCCF). This was a youth training group. He became a high-ranking leader for the Southern Province.
After high school, he joined the Zambia National Service. This was a one-year training program. He had thought about becoming a soldier. However, he changed his mind. He left the service and started working in the mines. This was in the Copperbelt province of Zambia.
Religious and Political Journey
While working in the mines, Nevers Mumba joined the Pentecostal Movement. He became a church elder at Maranathan Church when he was 19. The next year, in 1980, he started his own church. It was called Victory Bible Church and Victory Ministries International.
In 1997, he created the National Christian Coalition. This was a Christian political group. It became a registered political party in 1998. The party took part in the 2001 Zambian general election. Nevers Mumba finished fifth out of many candidates.
From 2009 to 2011, he served as Zambia's High Commissioner to Canada. This means he was Zambia's top diplomat in Canada.
On May 25, 2012, Nevers Mumba was chosen as the President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) political party. The MMD had lost the 2011 presidential election. It became an opposition party. Nevers Mumba won against other candidates to become its leader.
