New Cathedral of Lleida facts for kids
The New Cathedral of Lleida (also known as Catedral Nova de Lleida in Catalan, or Seu Nova) is an important church located in the city of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. It is the main church for the Bishop of Lleida.
History of the New Cathedral
This cathedral is not the first one in Lleida. It was built to replace an older cathedral called La Seu Vella, Lleida. The old cathedral was on the highest point in the city and was even used as a military base for a while.
The New Cathedral was designed in an early Neoclassical style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek and Roman buildings, with simple and grand designs. The main architect who created the plans was Pedro Martín Cermeño. The building work was then managed by Francisco Sabatini.
The cathedral is made from local gray stone, giving it a strong and simple look. You can also see the coat of arms of the House of Bourbon on the building, which was the ruling family at the time it was built.
The church has two tall bell towers on either side. These towers are connected by a flat area called a terrace, which has a decorative railing called a balustrade.
