Kids Encyclopedia Facts

New Coeln (also known as New Cöln, New Koeln, or New Köln) is a historic neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It started as a small rural village in the 1840s. This area was settled by a group of German immigrants. They came from the region around Cologne in Germany, which is called Köln in German.

By 1847, about fifty settlers lived in New Coeln. They formed a new Catholic church called St. Stephen's. In 1898, a book about Wisconsin described New Coeln as having a population of 35 people. It also mentioned that the village had a blacksmith shop and daily mail service.

A Piece of History: The New Coeln House

A part of the original New Coeln settlement is now inside the General Mitchell International Airport grounds. However, a very old building called the New Coeln House is still standing. This building has been known by different names over time, including Deuster's Saloon and the New Coeln House Dancehall.

Today, it is called the Landmark 1850 Inn. This historic inn is still open and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site that is protected.
