A Look at New Columbia's Past
New Columbia has a long and interesting history! Locals sometimes call the village "Newky."
How New Columbia Started
The village was officially created in 1818 by a man named David Yoder. He was born in 1765. David Yoder settled in an area that used to be called "Dogtown," right by the Susquehanna River. The Yoder family bought 60 acres of land. Then, they sold smaller pieces of land to other settlers who wanted to build homes there.
Growing Through the Years
In 1846, New Columbia was actually called New Columbus. It had about 30 homes, several stores, and a place where people could gather called a tavern.
By 1886, the village had grown quite a bit. There were 100 houses, a hotel, a store, and even a post office. It also had a train station, which was very important for travel and trade back then. There was even a boat shop! Around 350 people lived in New Columbia at this time.
In 1889, White Deer Township hired its first Constable, Moses Brown. A Constable is like a local police officer. Moses Brown was also a shoemaker! By the 1890s, New Columbia had many different businesses. You could find a baker, a candy shop, an ice cream shop, and even a bicycle shop.
Celebrating 200 Years!
In 2018, the town of New Columbia, Pennsylvania, celebrated a very special birthday: its 200th! They had many events throughout the year to mark this big milestone. These celebrations helped everyone remember and honor the rich history of this community.
