The Story of New England Coffee

Starting a Coffee Business

In 1916, two brothers, Menelaos and George Kaloyanides, came to the United States from Greece. They decided to start their own business called the New England Tea & Coffee Company. Their first location was in a building in Boston.

Back then, they roasted coffee by hand. They even delivered it around Boston using a horse and wagon! In 1918, they bought their first truck that ran on gasoline. Soon, more family members joined the growing business.

Growing and Moving Forward

In 1966, New England Coffee moved to its current home at 100 Charles Street in Malden, Massachusetts. Today, the company uses five different buildings. They have also made their coffee making and packaging much bigger and better.

Four generations of the Kaloyanides family have led the company since it began. These leaders include Menelaos Kaloyanides (1916-1966), Stephen Kaloyanides (1966-1996), James M. Kaloyanides (1996-2013), and James B. Kaloyanides (2013-2016). The Kaloyanides family has traveled all over the world to visit places where coffee beans grow. James B. even spent more than half a year in Costa Rica learning about coffee. In 2022, James B. returned to lead the company his great-grandfather started.

What Kind of Coffee Do They Make?

New England Coffee offers many types of coffee. They have different kinds of coffee beans, special mixes, and flavored coffees. They also make strong, dark roasts using Arabica coffee beans. Some of their decaffeinated coffees have even been reviewed by Consumer Reports. In 2016, New England Coffee celebrated its 100th birthday!
