New Force (in Spanish, Fuerza Nueva, often called FN) was a political group in Spain. It was known for its far-right views. Blas Piñar started it in 1976. He was a well-known figure during the time of Francoist Spain. New Force began as a company that published books. Its main goal was to keep the ideas of Francoism alive in Spain. This was happening during a time when Spain was changing to a democracy. After 1982, New Force stopped being a political party. However, it continued to publish books and magazines. Another party, the National Front, later took over its political ideas.

Starting as a Political Party

New Force started in 1966 as a publishing company. It was called Fuerza Nueva Editorial SA. This company published books and a magazine. These publications shared far-right and Francoist ideas. They were for people who missed the Franco era.

In 1976, Blas Piñar changed FN into a political party. It was one of the few openly far-right parties in the new Spanish democracy. The party wanted to continue Franco's ideas in every way. They did not support the new king, Juan Carlos I. Many different groups joined New Force. These included traditional Catholics, experts, and Spanish nationalists.

Early Years and Challenges

During Spain's move to democracy, some members of New Force were involved in serious incidents. These acts caused harm to workers, politicians, and students. For example, some members of Fuerza Joven, FN's youth group, were involved in a death. Other groups connected to FN also caused harm. One major event was the 1977 Atocha massacre. In this event, people linked to FN harmed labor activists. This attack was meant to cause a right-wing takeover. Instead, some FN members were arrested and faced legal consequences.

Elections and Loss of Support

In the 1977 Spanish general election, New Force joined a group called the National Alliance July 18. This was the first free election since the Spanish Civil War. The group also included other parties. However, they did not win any seats in parliament. They only got a small percentage of the votes.

For the 1979 elections, the group changed its name to the National Union. This time, they received more votes. This was enough for Blas Piñar to win one seat in the Congress of Deputies. He became a representative for Madrid.

New Force officially stopped being a party on November 20, 1982. This happened after the National Union group broke apart. The party also lost a lot of public support. In the 1982 general election, New Force ran alone. They received even fewer votes. Blas Piñar lost his seat in Congress. Problems within the party also made things worse. This led to some members leaving and forming a new group called the Hispanic Union.

Many leaders of later nationalist parties were once part of FN's youth group, Fuerza Joven. These include José Luis Corral and Rafael López-Diéguez. Other well-known people were also members. For example, José Maria del Nido, who was president of Sevilla FC, and Javier Tebas, who leads the main Spanish football league.

After New Force stopped being a party, the National Front took its place. This new party used the same name and logo. It also got help from similar parties in France and Italy. The National Front later dissolved in 1993.

New Force as a Publisher

As a publishing company, Fuerza Nueva Editorial published many books. These books focused on Spanish nationalism. They also shared ideas against communism and other political views. Some famous authors included Luis Carrero Blanco, a former prime minister. Another author was Léon Degrelle, a Belgian politician.

The company most often published works by Blas Piñar himself. They also published books by Horia Sima. He was a Romanian leader who lived in Spain. Piñar's books promoted Spanish pride and unity. Sima's books were mainly against communism and other political ideas.

Even after it stopped being a political party, New Force continued as a publishing house. It kept publishing its magazine. The magazine was published weekly, then every two weeks. It continued until March 2017.
