The Legislative Office Building in Concord, New Hampshire, is a very important government building. It stands right across from the New Hampshire State House, where laws are made. This large building was finished in 1889. It's special because it's one of the biggest buildings in New Hampshire made from local granite.

This building was first used as a post office. Because of its history, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history. The building is known on this list as the Old Post Office. It also became part of the Concord Civic District in 1983. This district includes many important buildings in Concord.

What Does the Building Look Like?

New Hampshire's Legislative Office Building is located just west of the state capitol. It takes up a whole city block. This block is surrounded by North State Street, Capitol Street, Park Street, and Green Street.

The building is large and has two stories. It is made from granite stone. Its style is called Richardsonian Romanesque. This means it has strong, heavy stone walls and round arches. The roof is a special type called a Chateauesque hip roof. It has iron decorations on top. The outside walls are rough, but the lower part of the building is smooth. The front of the building faces east. It has three large, round arches supported by smooth pillars.

A Look at Its History

The main part of the building was built between 1884 and 1889. It was built for the United States federal government. The person who designed it was James Riggs Hill. He was the main architect for the United States Department of the Treasury.

When it was first built, the building had many uses. It was not just a post office. It also housed other federal offices. The federal district court was there too. The federal government used this building until 1967. After that, the state of New Hampshire bought the building. They changed it to be used for legislative offices. This means it now holds offices for people who work with the state's laws. The building was made bigger twice, once in 1913 and again in 1938.
