The New Haven Lawn Club is a special private club in New Haven, Connecticut. It's located on Whitney Avenue, very close to Yale University. The club started way back in 1891. Today, many people consider it one of the most important clubs in the area.

At the club, members can enjoy fun activities like tennis, squash, and swimming in an outdoor pool. The main building, called the clubhouse, was built in 1931. It replaced an older building that burned down in 1929. Douglas Orr is known as the main architect, but William Douglas helped a lot with the detailed designs. The clubhouse has a mix of old-fashioned "Colonial Revival" style and modern "Art Moderne" decorations. In 2003, the club was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site.

The New Haven Lawn Club was created in 1891 by a group of people living in New Haven. After the first clubhouse was destroyed by a fire in 1929, architect Douglas Orr designed the beautiful building we see today.

When it first opened, the club was famous for hosting "lawn tennis." This sport is now more commonly called "court tennis." It was a popular new game that came from England. As of 2005, more than 520 families were members of the club.

Fun Activities at the Club

The New Haven Lawn Club offers many different activities and events for its members. You can play tennis or go for a swim. The club also has delicious food, art shows, and concerts. For those who love to read, there are book clubs. You can also join classes like yoga and pilates. The club is also a popular place for many important dances in New Haven.

Inside the Clubhouse: Special Rooms

When you visit the New Haven Lawn Club, you enter a grand foyer. This entrance has tall archways and columns made of local red brick. Octagonal windows let you look out at the club's well-kept grounds. A beautiful crystal chandelier hangs in the foyer. Many rooms throughout the building have cozy fireplaces that still work. The club has several rooms perfect for events.

The Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom is the biggest event space at the club. It can hold up to 225 people. This room has a high, curved ceiling that looks like the inside of a barrel. It also has a stage for performances and shiny hardwood floors. The entrance to the ballroom has a special type of flooring called terrazzo and its own fireplace.

The Main Dining Room

The club's main dining room can seat 120 people. There are two wood-burning fireplaces, one at each end of the room, that look exactly alike. Between them is a terrazzo floor. Large windows reach from the floor to the ceiling, offering great views of the club grounds. There's also a terrace attached to the dining room that overlooks the tennis courts.
