The New Haven Lawn Club is a private club located on Whitney Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. It's very close to Yale University. This club was started in 1891. Today, it is known as one of the most important clubs in the area. Members can enjoy activities like tennis, squash, and outdoor swimming.
The main building, called the clubhouse, was built in 1931. It replaced an older clubhouse that burned down in 1929. The design is mostly credited to architect Douglas W. Orr. However, many of the smaller details were designed by William Douglas. The building's style is mainly Colonial Revival. It also has cool Art Moderne decorations. The club was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This means it's an important historical site.

Club History: How It Started
A group of people living in New Haven started the club in 1891. The first clubhouse was destroyed by a fire in 1929. After the fire, Douglas Orr designed the building you see today.
The club first hosted a sport called lawn tennis. This sport is now more commonly known as court tennis. It was a popular new game brought over from England.
By 2005, more than 520 families were members of the club.

The New Haven Lawn Club offers many different activities and events. You can play tennis or go swimming. They also have food, art shows, and concerts. There are even book clubs, yoga, and pilates classes. The club is also a popular place for many big dances in New Haven.
Exploring the Club's Facilities
When you visit, you enter a main hall called the foyer. You walk through a covered entrance with arches and columns made of local red brick. You'll see octagon-shaped windows that look out over the club's well-kept grounds. Inside the foyer, there's a beautiful Lalique crystal chandelier. You can find working fireplaces throughout the building, making it feel cozy. The New Haven Lawn Club has several rooms for events.
The Grand Ballroom
The Grand Ballroom is the club's biggest event space. Up to 225 people can be in this room. The ceiling is shaped like a half-circle, which is called a barrel-vaulted ceiling. There's also a stage for performances and shiny hardwood floors. The entrance to this room has a special type of floor called terrazzo and a fireplace.
The Main Dining Room
The club's main dining room can seat 120 people. There are two fireplaces that burn wood, one at each end of the room. The floor between them is also made of terrazzo. Large windows go from the floor to the ceiling. They offer great views of the club's grounds. There's also a terrace attached that looks out over the tennis courts.
