New Hope is a small, unincorporated community in Cherokee County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government. In 2000, about 50 people lived there. It is part of the larger Tyler-Jacksonville combined statistical area.
A Look Back in Time
The area that is now New Hope was first settled in the 1850s. It was also known as Gum Creek back then.
During the American Civil War, the New Hope Baptist Church was founded. This church became a very important place for the community.
After World War I ended, a man named J.W. Linkenhoker built a store near the church. This store was still open in the 1920s.
In the next decade, there was only one business and seven residents in New Hope. By the early 1990s, the church and a few scattered houses were still there. In 2000, the community had a population of 50 people.

Learning in New Hope
The New Hope Baptist Church also served as a school for the community. This continued until a separate school building was built in 1897.
In 1973, this school joined the Jacksonville Independent School District. Sadly, the school building burned down in 1984.
