A Look Back at New Lisbon's History
New Lisbon has an interesting past! The area was first planned out and mapped in 1833. When it was first created, it had a different name: Jamestown.
How New Lisbon Got Its Name
The original name, Jamestown, was chosen to honor one of the people who helped start the community. His name was James Tomlinson, Jr. (1800-1881).
However, the name had to be changed later. This was because there was already another post office in Indiana with a very similar name. To avoid confusion, the community was renamed New Lisbon. It was named after a place called New Lisbon in Ohio. The post office in New Lisbon, Indiana, officially opened in 1836.
