New Marlborough Village is a special area in New Marlborough, Massachusetts, that has been kept just as it was a long time ago. It's like a time capsule! This area is called a historic district because it holds many old buildings and places that show what life was like in the past.

The village includes properties along Massachusetts Route 57, New Marlborough, Monterey, and Southfield Roads. For many years, this village was the main center of town life. It still looks much like it did in the late 1800s. Because of its history, the village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

What Makes New Marlborough Village Special?

This historic village is full of interesting old buildings and stories. It shows how towns grew and changed over time.

How Did the Village Start?

New Marlborough Village began in 1740 when a person named Benjamin Wheeler built the first house there. Amazingly, that house is still standing today! More people came, and the village grew around his home. Soon, it had a village green, a church, and many houses from the 1700s and 1800s.

What Can You See in the Village Today?

The heart of the historic district is where Route 57 meets Southfield Road. If you go north from this crossing, you'll find the village green. On the north side of the green, there's a church built in 1839 and an old tavern.

The village also has some remains of old factories, like a foundry from the 1830s. A foundry is a place where metal is melted and shaped. This was one of the few industrial spots in the village. Many of the houses here are great examples of a building style called Greek Revival. This style was popular in the 1800s and often looks like ancient Greek temples.

At the west end of the village, you can find the town's very first cemetery. Just north of the church, you might see the old foundations of an academy. An academy was a type of school that operated from 1855 to 1885.
