The New Mexico Museum of Art is a fantastic art museum located in Santa Fe. It is managed by the state of New Mexico, United States. This museum is one of four state-run museums in Santa Fe that are part of the Museum of New Mexico. You can find it very close to the historic Santa Fe Plaza. The museum received its current name in 2007. Before that, it was known as The Museum of Fine Arts.

History of the Museum Building

The museum building was designed by a talented architect named Isaac Rapp. It was finished in 1917. The building is a great example of Pueblo Revival Style architecture. This style looks like the old Native American pueblos and Spanish colonial buildings. It's one of Santa Fe's most famous examples of how Native American and Spanish designs can blend together. The front of the building was inspired by mission churches from places like Acoma, San Felipe, Cochiti, Laguna, Santa Ana, and Pecos.

Art Collections

The museum has a huge art collection with over 20,000 pieces! These include paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints, drawings, and mixed-media artworks. Many famous artists have their work displayed here. Some of these artists include Ansel Adams, Gustave Baumann, Georgia O'Keeffe, Fritz Scholder, and T. C. Cannon. You can also see art from groups like the Ashcan School and the Taos Society of Artists.

Paintings on Display

The museum's painting collection features many important works. Here are some examples:

The St. Francis Auditorium is a special hall located inside the New Mexico Museum of Art. It's a popular spot for many cultural and music groups. For example, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Santa Fe Community Orchestra use this space. The auditorium can seat up to 450 people. Inside, you can see several large paintings called murals. These murals show scenes of St. Francis of Assisi. They were first designed by Donald Beauregard and then finished by Carlos Vierra and Kenneth M. Chapman.

Museum Library

The museum also has a library. This library is filled with art books and magazines. It also has information about artists whose work is part of the museum's collection. You can find catalogs from all the museum's art shows since 1917.

The Vladem Contemporary is a newer part of the New Mexico Museum of Art. It opened in September 2023. This annex is where the museum shows its modern and contemporary art collections. The building itself used to be a warehouse built in 1936. It was changed and updated to become this new art space. The annex is named after Bob and Ellen Vladem, who are generous supporters of the museum.
