New Minden is a small village located in Washington County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 175 people lived there. The village once had its own post office, which operated from 1868 until 1976.

Village History
The 2013 Tornado Event
On November 17, 2013, a very strong tornado hit New Minden around noon. This tornado was rated as an EF4, which means it had extremely powerful winds. It caused a lot of damage to homes and seriously harmed St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The tornado also damaged the Flying M Ranch, which is just northeast of the village. It continued to cause damage in the nearby Hoyleton area. The tornado traveled for about 10.6 miles (17.1 km) and had winds estimated at 180 miles per hour (290 km/h). Sadly, two people in the New Minden area lost their lives because of this tornado.

New Minden's Geography
New Minden is a small village, covering about 0.28 square miles (0.72 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.
The village is easy to reach, located about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Exit 50 on Interstate 64. Two important Illinois roads, Route 127 and Route 177, meet right in the center of New Minden.

Over the years, the number of people living in New Minden has changed. In 1880, there were 145 residents. The population grew to 245 by 1910, which was its highest point. Since then, the number of people has gone up and down, with 175 residents counted in the 2020 census.
Local Religion
New Minden is home to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, which was built in 1847. This church is special because it was one of the first 14 churches that formed the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
