New Springville is a neighborhood located on Staten Island, which is one of the five big boroughs of New York City in the USA. It's a busy and growing area known for its shops and schools.

History of New Springville

New Springville was first settled a long time ago, in 1680. It was originally called Karle's Neck Village because it was in an area known as Karle's Neck.

By the early 1800s, the community had a dock on Richmond Creek and many natural freshwater springs. Because of these springs, the name was changed to Springville, and then later to New Springville.

For many years, New Springville was mostly a quiet, country-like area. But things started to change a lot in 1964. That year, a large department store called E. J. Korvette opened where a chicken farm used to be. Also in 1964, the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge opened. This bridge made it much easier to get to Staten Island, causing many more people to move there.

In 1973, the Staten Island Mall opened on land that was once a small airport. This really changed the neighborhood! Soon, more land nearby was used for businesses, especially stores. New Springville then became a major center for shopping and offices, similar to St. George.

The neighborhood also became a big spot for public transportation. It's the second largest bus hub on Staten Island, after the St. George ferry terminal. Six city bus routes serve the area, including one that goes to Brooklyn. The Yukon Bus Depot, which opened in the early 1980s, can hold 380 buses.

New Springville has also grown a lot with new homes. Thousands of single-family homes were built here, along with apartment and condominium buildings near the Staten Island Mall. In recent years, new schools have been built too. P.S. 58, called the Space Shuttle Columbia School, is an elementary school. New intermediate and high schools have also been finished.

The historic 19th-century LaTourette House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's an important historical building.

Getting Around New Springville

New Springville is a major transportation spot with many bus routes. However, it still has some challenges with getting around, especially late at night.

The S44, S59, S61, S79 bus routes serve the area during the day. There are also six express bus routes that go to Manhattan. These include the SIM4, SIM4C, SIM4X, SIM8, SIM8X, and SIM31.

Until 1995, the S59 bus route offered late-night service in New Springville. But as of 2010, there are no overnight buses directly in the neighborhood. The closest overnight bus routes are the S74 on Arthur Kill Road in Eltingville and the S62 on Victory Boulevard in Bulls Head. These routes are quite far from the homes in New Springville.
