A sign with a bull's head on it hung outside the tavern, giving the area its unique name. For a while, this area was also known as Phoenixville.
Bulls Head During the American Revolution
During the American Revolution, the old Bulls Head tavern became a meeting spot for people who supported the British King. These people were known as Loyalists or Tories.
From Farmland to Homes
Not too long ago, in the early 1960s, Bulls Head and its nearby areas like Willowbrook and Graniteville were mostly open farmland. But everything changed quickly after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964. This new bridge made it much easier to travel to Staten Island, leading to a lot of new homes being built. Many families, especially Jewish families from Brooklyn and Queens, moved to Bulls Head and other neighborhoods in the middle of Staten Island. Today, you'll find a mix of people living here, including many Italian Catholic families.
