New York State Assembly |
The New York State Assembly is an important part of the New York State Legislature. Think of it like one half of the state's law-making team. It's called the lower house. The other half, the New York State Senate, is the upper house.
There are 150 people, called Assembly members, in the Assembly. They are elected to serve for two years. There are no limits on how many times they can be re-elected.
The Assembly meets in Albany at the State Capitol building. Right now, the Democratic Party has the most members and is in charge.
Who Leads the Assembly?
The New York State Assembly has leaders who help guide its work. These leaders are chosen by the members. They make sure meetings run smoothly and that laws are discussed fairly.
Position | Name | Party |
---|---|---|
Speaker | Carl Heastie | Democratic |

Minority Leader | William Barclay | Republican |
- The Speaker is the main leader of the Assembly. They are in charge of the meetings and help decide which bills (ideas for new laws) get voted on.
- The Majority Leader is chosen by the party with the most members. They help their party work together to pass laws.
- The Minority Leader is chosen by the party with fewer members. They lead their party and offer different ideas.
How Many Members Are in Each Party?
The Assembly has 150 seats. The Democratic Party has been the main party in control since 1975. As of October 2020, the Democrats hold 101 of the 150 seats. This means they have a strong majority. The Republican Party holds 43 seats. There is also one member from the Independence Party.
