Carl Edward Heastie (born September 25, 1967) is an American politician from New York. A politician is someone who works in government to represent the people. Since 2001, he has been a member of the New York State Assembly. In 2015, he became the Speaker of the New York State Assembly, which is one of the most powerful jobs in the state's government.

Early Life and Education
Carl Heastie was born in New York City. For college, he went to Stony Brook University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. This degree was in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
Later, he attended Baruch College in New York City. There, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a focus on Finance.
Political Career
Before becoming a full-time politician, Heastie had other important jobs. He worked as a budget analyst for the New York City Comptroller, helping to manage the city's money. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Monroe College.
New York State Assembly
In 2000, Heastie was elected to the New York State Assembly. He represents the 83rd District in the Northeast Bronx. This area includes neighborhoods like Williamsbridge, Wakefield, and Eastchester.
As an Assembly member, Heastie worked to improve his community. He was a key leader in the effort to build a new school for students from kindergarten to 8th grade. He also supported new laws to help protect students in New York City schools. In 2013, he became the head of the Assembly Labor Committee, which deals with issues related to jobs and workers.
From 2008 to 2015, Heastie was also the leader of the Democratic Party in the Bronx. He stepped down from this role when he became the Assembly Speaker.
Speaker of the New York State Assembly
On February 3, 2015, Carl Heastie was elected Speaker of the Assembly. This made him the first African-American to ever hold this powerful position. The Speaker leads the Assembly, helps decide which laws get voted on, and plays a big part in making the state's budget.
After becoming Speaker, Heastie spoke at a rally with civil rights leader Al Sharpton. He told the crowd that his new role was a "tremendous opportunity for our community." He said that he would make sure their voices were heard in the state government.
