Williamsbridge is a neighborhood in the northern part of the Bronx in New York City. It is bordered by East 222nd Street to the north and Boston Road to the east. To the south is East Gun Hill Road, and the Bronx River is to the west. White Plains Road is a main street that runs through Williamsbridge.

This neighborhood is part of Bronx Community Board 12. Its ZIP Codes are 10466, 10467, and 10469. The local police department is the 47th Precinct of the New York City Police Department.

History of Williamsbridge

Williamsbridge got its name from an 18th-century farmer named John Williams. He had a farm near the Bronx River, close to Gun Hill Road. John Williams built the first bridge over the Bronx River in that area. The community officially became a village on November 23, 1888.

There was once a neighborhood called Olinville within Williamsbridge. It was named after Stephen Olin, a Methodist minister. You can still hear the name "Olinville" in some old telephone numbers, like 652, 653, 654, and 655.

People and Community

Williamsbridge was once home to many Jewish and Italian-American families. In the 1970s, it became mostly African American. Since the 1980s, many people from the Caribbean and West Indies have moved to the area.

In 2010, Williamsbridge had a population of 61,321 people. Most residents, about 67.5%, were African American. About 25.6% were Hispanic or Latino. White residents made up 2.8% of the population.

The average life expectancy in this area is about 81 years. This is similar to the rest of New York City. Many residents are young people or middle-aged adults. About 24% are under 18, and 27% are between 25 and 44.

In 2017, the average household income in the area was about $48,018. About 22% of people in Williamsbridge and Eastchester live in poverty. This is less than the average for the Bronx. Many families (57%) find it hard to pay their rent.

Land and Parks

Williamsbridge has many multi-family homes and apartment buildings. Most homes are private, with two or three stories. The neighborhood is mostly flat and covers about one and a half square miles.

The Seventh Draft District World War I Monument is located at East 219th Street and Bronx Blvd. The park around it has been improved. Since 2009, there has been an annual Memorial Day service at the monument.
