What Was the Transit Police?
The New York City Transit Police was formed to patrol the subway and bus systems. Their main job was to make sure that millions of daily riders felt safe. They also helped to prevent crimes like theft and vandalism on trains and in stations.
Why Was It Created?
Before 1953, different groups handled safety on the transit system. But as the subway grew, there was a need for a dedicated police force. The Transit Police was created to focus only on the unique challenges of policing a busy underground and above-ground transit network.
How Did It End?
In 1995, the New York City Transit Police Department joined with the NYPD. This change was made by the mayor at the time, Rudy Giuliani. The Transit Police became a special part of the NYPD called the Transit Bureau. This meant that all police services in New York City were now under one big police department.
