The New York Park Association was a group started in 1881 by John Mullaly and other citizens in New York City. They were worried about how fast the city was growing. This group worked hard to get land for new parks and parkways (roads with green spaces) in New York City. Their efforts were very important in passing the New Parks Act in 1884.
Why the New York Park Association Was Formed
The association officially began on November 26, 1881, at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. Their main goal was to create more park areas in New York City. At that time, land for parks could be bought for a fairly low price. John Mullaly was chosen as the secretary of the association.
The group believed that parks should be for everyone to use. They felt that Central Park, while beautiful, had too many rules that made it hard for regular people to enjoy it fully. They wanted new parks to be truly open and welcoming to all citizens.
What the Association Achieved
The hard work of the New York Park Association led to the creation of several well-known parks. These include Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx Park, Crotona Park, and Claremont Park. Thanks to their vision, New York City gained many important green spaces that people still enjoy today.
