The New Zealand catshark, also known as Bythaelurus dawsoni, is a small shark that lives deep in the ocean. It belongs to the family of catsharks, which are known for their cat-like eyes.

This special shark is endemic to New Zealand, meaning it's found only in the deep waters around this country. It can grow up to 45 centimetres (18 in) long, which is about the length of a ruler.

The New Zealand catshark is a bottom-dwelling shark, meaning it lives near the seafloor. It has a dark brown back with a few light spots and a white belly. It mostly eats crustaceans, like crabs and shrimp, that live on the ocean floor. Don't worry, this shark is completely harmless to humans!

Protecting the New Zealand Catshark

The New Zealand Department of Conservation keeps an eye on how many of these sharks are in the ocean. They have said the New Zealand catshark is "Not Threatened." This means it's not currently in danger of disappearing.

However, they also added a note: "Data Poor." This means scientists don't have a lot of information about this shark. It's hard to know exactly how many there are or how they are doing.

One thing that could be a risk to these sharks is bottom trawling. This is a type of fishing where large nets are dragged along the ocean floor. Sometimes, sharks like the New Zealand catshark can get caught in these nets by accident. Because we don't have much data, it's important to keep learning more about this unique deep-sea creature.
