Newcombia is a special group, or genus, of snails. These snails live in trees in tropical places. They breathe air and are a type of land snail. They are also called "arboreal" because they live high up in trees. Newcombia snails belong to the mollusk family called Achatinellidae.
Where Do Newcombia Snails Live?
The Newcombia tree snails are very unique. They are found only in Hawaii. Specifically, they live on the islands of Maui and Molokai. When an animal or plant lives only in one place, it is called "endemic." So, these snails are endemic to Hawaii.
- Six of the known species of Newcombia live on Molokai. These include Newcombia canaliculata, Newcombia lirata, Newcombia perkinsi, Newcombia pfeifferi, Newcombia philippiana, and Newcombia sulcata.
- Only one species, Newcombia cumingi, is found on the island of Maui.
Scientists Henry Augustus Pilsbry and Charles Montague Cooke, Jr. studied these snails a long time ago, between 1912 and 1914. Their work is still used today to understand these snails.
Types of Newcombia Snails
There are seven known species within the Newcombia genus. Here are the different types:
- Newcombia canaliculata Baldwin, 1905
- Newcombia cumingi Sykes, 1896
- Newcombia lirata Mighels, 1912
- Newcombia perkinsi Sykes, 1896
- Newcombia pfeifferi Newcomb, 1853
- † Newcombia philippiana Pfeiffer, 1850
- Newcombia sulcata Pfeiffer, 1857
The little dagger symbol (†) next to Newcombia philippiana means that this species is now extinct. This means it no longer exists anywhere in the world.
