Newlyn Downs is a beautiful natural area in Cornwall.

Newlyn Downs is a very special natural area in north Cornwall, England. It's known for its unique plants and animals. Because it's so important, it's protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Where is Newlyn Downs Located?

Newlyn Downs covers a large area, about 115.7 hectares. That's like 286 football fields! Most of this special place is found near the village of St Newlyn East. This is about 7 kilometers (4 miles) south of the town of Newquay.

Small streams start in Newlyn Downs. These streams eventually flow into the River Gannel. Newlyn Downs is also recognized as a Special Area of Conservation. This means it's important for nature across Europe.

Unique Plants and Environment

The ground at Newlyn Downs is very interesting. It's made from slate-based mudstones and siltstones. In many spots, the soil stays wet all the time. This wet ground is perfect for a special type of habitat called Southern Atlantic wet heath.

This wet heath is the largest of its kind in Cornwall. You can find unique plants here, like cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix). Another special plant is Dorset heath (Erica ciliaris). These plants love the wet, boggy conditions found at Newlyn Downs.
