Unique Plants and Environment
The ground at Newlyn Downs is very interesting. It's made from slate-based mudstones and siltstones. In many spots, the soil stays wet all the time. This wet ground is perfect for a special type of habitat called Southern Atlantic wet heath.
This wet heath is the largest of its kind in Cornwall. You can find unique plants here, like cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix). Another special plant is Dorset heath (Erica ciliaris). These plants love the wet, boggy conditions found at Newlyn Downs.
