The Newton station is a historic building in Newton, Mississippi, USA. It used to be a busy train station, also called a railroad depot. This old building has a long history, including being part of a famous event during the American Civil War. Today, it's used by the Newton Chamber of Commerce.

What is the Newton Station?
The Newton station is a special building that was once a train depot. A depot is where trains stop, and people can get on or off. It's also where goods are loaded and unloaded. This particular depot was built in 1904. It was an important stop on the Alabama and Vicksburg (A&V) Railroad. Later, another big train company called the Illinois Central operated trains here.
A Historic Landmark
Because of its important history, the Newton station was added to a special list called the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It's officially known as the Alabama and Vicksburg Railroad Depot on this list. Being on this list means it's recognized as a place that is important to the history of the United States. The Civil War and the Depot
The area where the Newton station stands has a dramatic past. During the American Civil War, which was fought from 1861 to 1865, railroads were very important. They were used to move soldiers, supplies, and weapons. Because of this, controlling or destroying railroads was a key strategy for both sides.
Grierson's Raid
On April 24, 1863, a group of Union soldiers, led by General Benjamin Grierson, attacked the train tracks near Newton. This event was part of a larger plan called Grierson's Raid. The Union soldiers wanted to damage the Vicksburg-Meridian rail route. This would make it harder for the Confederate army to move supplies. During their raid, they tore up the train tracks and burned down the original Newton depot. The depot we see today was built after the war, in 1904.
What is it Used for Today?
After many years of being a train station, the Newton station found a new purpose. Today, it is home to the Newton Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce is a group that works to help local businesses and the community grow. So, this historic building continues to be an important part of Newton, Mississippi, even though trains no longer stop there for passengers.
