Nezami (1141–1209)

Nezami (born Hakīm Nizām ad-Dīn Abū Muhammad Ilyās ibn-Yusūf ibn-Zakī ibn-Mu'ayyid Nezāmi Ganjavi) was a famous Persian poet. He lived from 1141 to 1209. Nezami was born in a city called Ganja, which is now part of Azerbaijan. He is well-known for writing five important books of poetry.

Who Was Nezami?

Nezami is considered one of the greatest poets in Persian literature. He wrote long poems that told exciting stories and shared deep ideas. His works have been loved and read for hundreds of years.

Nezami's Family Life

Nezami's personal life was also important. Around the year 1169 or 1170, he married a woman named Afaq. They had a son together, who was born in 1174 and named Muhammad.

Nezami's Famous Books

Nezami wrote five major poetry books. These books are often called his "Khamsa," which means "The Quintet" or "The Five." Each book tells a different story or explores different themes.

The Five Poems

  • Sirler Xezinesi (The Treasury of Mysteries): This was Nezami's first major work. It is a collection of poems that share moral lessons and wisdom.
  • Xosrov ve Shirin (Khosrow and Shirin): This is a romantic epic poem. It tells the story of the love between a Sasanian king, Khosrow, and an Armenian princess, Shirin.
  • Leyli ve Mecnun (Layla and Majnun): This is another famous love story. It tells the tragic tale of two lovers, Layla and Majnun, whose love is forbidden.
  • Yeddi Gozel (The Seven Beauties) or (Haft Peykar): This poem tells the story of a king who visits seven princesses from different countries. Each princess tells him a story.
  • Isgendername (The Book of Alexander): This epic poem tells the story of Alexander the Great. It shows him not just as a conqueror, but also as a wise philosopher.

Nezami's poems are still studied and enjoyed today. They are important not only for their beautiful language but also for the stories and lessons they share.
