Stories and Sacred Places
In 1928, a person named P. D. Riddell met many Ngandangara people. He found them at Durham Downs. He was there to study a special place.
This place had many stones arranged in a pattern. The stone arrangement was very large. It measured about 90 feet by 200 feet. Some stones were as tall as 3 feet. They were set up in clear circles.
The Ngandangara people called this site Alabena. It was a very important place to them. They did not want to share much information about it.
However, one person eventually told Riddell something special. The site marked the place where the very first Aboriginal person 'jumped up'. This means it was believed to be where the first human appeared.
Over time, cattle were herded in this area. This activity damaged the stone arrangement. It was a sacred ceremonial ground.
