Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Ngarinman or Ngarinyman people are an Aboriginal Australian group from the Northern Territory. They have a rich history and culture, and they traditionally spoke the Ngarinyman language.

Ngarinman Country and Land

The Ngarinman people lived on a large area of land, estimated to be about 4,000 square miles (around 10,000 square kilometers). This land was very important to them.

Their main area was around the Wickham River. This river can sometimes dry up, but it was still a central part of their home. They also lived near the Upper Victoria River, especially around a place called Jasper Creek. Their lands stretched west of the Victoria River Downs.

The southern edge of their territory was at a place called Munjun, also known as Mount Sanford. To the west, their land reached as far as Limbunya. These places were all part of the Ngarinman people's traditional country.

Ngarinman Language

The Ngarinman language is a very important part of the Ngarinman people's culture and identity. Like many Indigenous languages, it faced challenges over time.

To help keep the language alive, the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) worked on a special project. In 2019, they helped create a Ngarinyman to English Dictionary. This dictionary is a great tool for learning and preserving the language for future generations. It helps people understand and speak Ngarinyman, connecting them to their heritage.

Other Names for the Ngarinman People

Over time, the Ngarinman people have been known by a few different names. These include:

  • Ngainman
  • Ngainmun
  • Ngrainmun
  • Hainman (a name sometimes used by non-Indigenous people in the area)
  • Hyneman
  • Narinman
  • Nariman
