AIATSIS N121

The Ngarnji (also called Ngarnka) was a language spoken by the Ngarnka people. They lived in the Barkly Tablelands, a region in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Sadly, the last person who spoke Ngarnji fluently passed away between 1997 and 1998. This means the language is now extinct.

Ngarnji belonged to a group of languages called the Mirndi family. Within that family, it was part of the Ngurlun branch.

It was closely related to other languages spoken nearby, like Binbinka, Gudanji, and Wambaya. It was also related, but not as closely, to Jingulu and three languages from the Victoria River District: Jaminjung, Ngaliwurru, and Nungali.

Not much was written down about Ngarnji before it became extinct. However, some students have studied parts of the language for their university projects. Work is still being done to create a basic grammar (rules of the language) and a dictionary (list of words) for Ngarnji.

What is a Language Family?

Just like human families, languages can be related to each other. A "language family" is a group of languages that all came from a single older language. Think of it like siblings or cousins who share common ancestors.

For example, English, German, and French are all part of the Indo-European language family. They share some similarities because they evolved from a common ancestor language.

The Ngarnji language was part of the Mirndi language family. This tells us it shared a common ancestor with other Mirndi languages.

Why are Languages Important?

Languages are much more than just words. They carry the history, culture, and knowledge of a people. When a language is lost, it's like losing a unique way of seeing the world.

Each language has its own special sounds, grammar rules, and ways of expressing ideas. It also holds stories, songs, and traditions that are passed down through generations.

The loss of the Ngarnji language means that some of the unique knowledge and culture of the Ngarnka people might be harder to access or understand for future generations. This is why many people work hard to document and preserve languages that are at risk.
