The Nguri were an Indigenous Australian people who lived in the state of Queensland, Australia. They are one of the many Aboriginal groups who have a long and rich history on this continent.

Where the Nguri People Lived

The Nguri people lived in southern Queensland, mainly around the Upper Maranoa River. Their land stretched northwest to the amazing gorges of the Chesterton Range.

A famous researcher named Norman Tindale estimated that their traditional country covered about 3,500 square miles (about 9,065 square kilometers). This area went north from places like Mount Elliot and Donnybrook. It reached as far west as Merivale, which is located west of the Great Dividing Range. Their land also included areas known today as Hillside and Redford.
