An Ngurungaeta (pronounced Ngoo-roon-GAH-eh-tah) is a very important leader or elder among certain Aboriginal groups in Australia. This role is especially important for the Woiwurrung people and related groups like the Taungurung Ngurai-illum Wurrung. An Ngurungaeta had a similar high standing to an Arweet among the Bunurong and Wathaurong people.
The current Ngurungaeta is Murrundindi. Over time, especially after European settlers arrived in the 1800s, the meaning and recognition of the Ngurungaeta role changed. However, it always remained a symbol of leadership and cultural importance.
