Nicholas Blundell facts for kids
Nicholas Blundell (born 1669, died 1737) was an important English landowner. He lived at Crosby Hall in Lancashire. Nicholas Blundell is most famous for his diaries. These diaries give us a special look into what life was like for wealthy English families in the 1700s.
The Blundell Family
Nicholas Blundell's family had been Catholic for many centuries. In England during that time, it was sometimes hard to be Catholic. People who refused to follow the official Church of England were called "recusants." The Blundells were one of the main Catholic landowning families before Catholics were given more rights in the 1800s.
Nicholas Blundell's Life
Nicholas Blundell was the oldest son of William Blundell. His father was known as "the Cavalier" because of his adventures during the English Civil War.
Nicholas Blundell kept detailed notes and diaries. These writings were first published in 1880. They are a valuable source for historians today. For example, a famous historian named Lady Antonia Fraser used his notes in her book about English women in the 1600s.
Nicholas Blundell married Frances Langdale. They had two daughters. Their younger daughter, Frances, later took on the Blundell family name and coat of arms. This happened when she inherited the family's land. Nicholas Blundell's family members, through his daughter Frances, still live at Crosby Hall today.
