Sir Nicholas Alexander Brathwaite was a very important leader in Grenada. He served as the head of government for two different periods. First, he was the Chairman of the Interim Advisory Council from 1983 to 1984. This council was set up after the United States invasion of Grenada. Later, he became the Prime Minister of Grenada from 1990 to 1995.

Early Life and Education
Nicholas Brathwaite was born on July 8, 1925, in Carriacou, Grenada. He received a good education. He studied at a Teacher's Training College in Trinidad. He also attended the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
Leading Grenada After 1983
In 1983, there was an important event in Grenada's history. After the invasion of Grenada, the country needed a new government. The Governor-General, Sir Paul Scoon, chose Nicholas Brathwaite for a big role.
Chairman of the Interim Advisory Council
Brathwaite was a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party. In December 1983, when American troops left, he became the chairman of the Interim Advisory Council. This council helped to guide Grenada. He worked to bring democracy back to the country. He served as the head of this council for about one year. His party then lost the elections in December 1984.
Second Term as Prime Minister
Nicholas Brathwaite continued his work in politics. In 1989, he was chosen as the leader of the NDC party.
Winning the 1990 Election
The NDC party won the elections in 1990. This meant Nicholas Brathwaite became Prime Minister again. He served from March 1990 until February 1995. During this time, he also held other important jobs. He was the finance minister, managing the country's money. For some of that time, he was also the foreign minister. He resigned shortly before the 1995 elections. His party, the NDC, lost those elections.
Awards and Later Life
Nicholas Brathwaite received special honors for his service. In 1975, he was given the OBE award. In 1995, he was knighted, which means he was given the title "Sir." Sir Nicholas Brathwaite passed away on October 28, 2016. He was 91 years old.
