Nicholas Guido Anthony Denton was born on August 24, 1966. He is a British entrepreneur who works with the internet. He is also a journalist and a blogger. Mr. Denton started and used to own a group of blogs called Gawker Media. He was also the main editor of Gawker, a website based in New York City. The company went out of business after a lawsuit.

Early Life and Education

Nick Denton grew up in Hampstead, a part of London, England. His father, Geoffrey Denton, was a British economist. His mother, Marika, was a psychotherapist. She came from Hungary.

Mr. Denton went to University College School (UCS). Later, he studied at University College, Oxford. There, he focused on Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. While at Oxford, he became the editor of the university's magazine, The Isis Magazine.

Nick Denton started his career as a journalist. He worked for the Financial Times, which is a daily newspaper about business in Britain. He also helped write a book called All That Glitters (1996). This book was about the collapse of Barings Bank, a very old bank in London.

In 1998, Mr. Denton helped start a social networking site called First Tuesday. This site helped people connect online. In the same year, he also co-founded a company called Moreover Technologies. This company helped monitor news and media. He started it with two school friends, David Galbraith and Angus Bankes. Soon after, he moved to San Francisco in the United States. In 2002, he moved to New York City.

Starting Gawker Media

In 2002, Nick Denton founded Gawker Media. He first ran the company from his apartment in New York City. Gawker Media began with two main internet sites. These were Gawker, which shared news and gossip, and Gizmodo, a blog about gadgets and technology.

Over time, Gawker Media added more popular blogs. These included Jezebel, which was for women, and Deadspin, a sports site. Other sites were Lifehacker for tips on living better, Jalopnik for car culture, io9 for science and science fiction, and Kotaku for video games.

In 2008, Gawker Media sold some of its sites. They sold the music site Idolator and the consumer site Consumerist. By 2010, Gawker Media's websites had many visitors. About 17.5 million people from the US visited them each month.

In 2016, Gawker Media faced a major lawsuit. Because of this lawsuit, the company had to declare bankruptcy. Most of its assets were then sold to another company, Univision.
