Early Life and Education
Denton grew up in Hampstead, a part of London, England. His father, Geoffrey Denton, was a British economist. His mother, Marika, was a Hungarian Jewish woman. She survived a very difficult time for Jewish people in Hungary during World War II. She also escaped from Hungary in 1956 when she was 18. Marika was a psychotherapist and passed away before Denton moved to New York City. Denton has a younger sister named Rebecca.
He went to University College School (UCS) and then to University College, Oxford. At Oxford, he studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He also became the editor of the university's magazine, The Isis Magazine.
Denton's Career Journey
Denton started his career as a journalist. He worked for the Financial Times, which is a British newspaper about business. He also helped write a book called All That Glitters (1996). This book was about the closing of Barings Bank, a very old bank in London.
In 1998, he helped start First Tuesday, a website where people could connect with each other. In the same year, Denton also helped create Moreover Technologies. This company helped keep track of news and media. He started it with David Galbraith and Angus Bankes, who were his schoolmates. Soon after, he moved to San Francisco in the United States. In the summer of 2002, he moved to New York City.
Starting Gawker Media
Denton founded Gawker Media in 2002. At first, he ran the company from his apartment in New York City. Gawker Media began with just two websites. These were Gawker, which shared news and gossip, and Gizmodo, a blog about gadgets and technology.
Over time, Gawker Media added more popular websites. These included Jezebel, which was for women, and Deadspin, a sports site. Other sites were Lifehacker for tips on living better, Jalopnik for car culture, io9 for science and science fiction, and Kotaku for video games.
In 2008, Gawker Media sold some of its websites. They sold the music site Idolator to Buzz Media. They also sold Gridskipper and Consumerist, a site about consumer issues. By 2010, Gawker Media's websites were visited by 17.5 million people in the US each month.
Gawker Media earned a lot of money, but in 2016, the company faced a major legal case. After losing this case, most of its assets were sold to Univision for $135 million. This led to the company closing down.
Personal Life
In 2007, Denton was listed as a wealthy person in the Sunday Times Rich List. His wealth was estimated based on his previous companies and the value of Gawker Media at that time.
On May 31, 2014, Denton married Derrence Washington, who is an actor. Denton lives in New York City.
