A few years later, Mackey was elected to be the sheriff in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. A sheriff is a top law enforcement officer in a county. However, the results of this election were later canceled because of some issues with how the votes were handled. Another person, Daniel "Chipp" Bailey, became sheriff instead.
Serving in the North Carolina House
In 2009, Nick Mackey was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives. He represented the 99th district. He took over this role from Drew Saunders.
While serving in the House, his license to practice law was temporarily suspended in 2010. This happened because he had not shared some important information when he applied for his law license in 2002.
The day after his law license was suspended, Mackey ran for re-election but did not win. He was defeated by Rodney Moore in the primary election. Rodney Moore then went on to win the 99th district seat. Nick Mackey's law license was given back to him in June 2011.
Later Legal Career
In 2016, a person who had been one of Mackey's law clients was released from prison. This client had served 10 years of a 30-year sentence. A court found that there had been issues with Mackey's representation during the client's trial.
In February 2022, Nick Mackey's law license was permanently taken away. This decision was made after he admitted to certain actions related to incidents that occurred in 2020.
