Channel History
Before Nickelodeon New Zealand
Before the New Zealand channel started, kids in New Zealand could watch the Southeast Asian version of Nickelodeon. This version was broadcast from Singapore. It became available to viewers on Sky Digital and UHF in January 2000.
How the Channel Operated
The Nickelodeon channel in New Zealand broadcast shows 24 hours a day. It had a special block of shows called Nick Jr. This block was for younger kids.
Nick Jr. aired at these times:
- Monday to Wednesday: 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM
- Thursday and Friday: 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM
- Weekends: 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM
Why the Channel Closed
In September 2010, MTV Networks New Zealand announced some big news. This company owned Nickelodeon, MTV, and Comedy Central in New Zealand. They said they would close their offices in New Zealand starting December 1, 2010.
This meant that all the TV channel operations for Viacom in New Zealand would be managed from Australia. Specifically, they would be handled by MTV Networks Australia in Sydney. Because of this change, the New Zealand version of Nickelodeon closed.
On December 1, 2010, the Australian version of Nickelodeon took its place. Also, two new channels, Nick Jr. and MTV Classic, were launched in New Zealand.
