Nicolae Pescaru (born March 27, 1943 – died May 25, 2019) was a Romanian footballer and manager. He is best known for his long career with Steagul Roșu Brașov.

Playing for Football Clubs

Nicolae Pescaru was born in Breaza, Prahova County, Romania. He began playing football as a junior in 1959. His first youth teams were Someșul Beclean and Progresul Făgăraș.

Starting Senior Football

Pescaru started his senior career at Chimia Făgăraș. This team played in Divizia B, which is Romania's second football league.

His Time at Steagul Roșu Brașov

In 1962, Nicolae moved to Steagul Roșu Brașov. He made his debut in Divizia A, the top Romanian league, on September 23, 1962. His team won that first game 4–2 against Știința Cluj.

Pescaru played for Steagul Roșu Brașov for 19 seasons! For about 13 or 14 of those years, he was the team's captain. He was famous for telling his teammates: "You have to defend the honor of being flagbearers!"

European Competitions and Loyalty

During his time at Brașov, the team finished fourth in the top league in the 1964–65 season. He also played in 11 European matches. He even scored a goal in a 4–2 win against Espanyol Barcelona in 1965.

The club was relegated (moved down) to the second division twice. But Pescaru stayed with the team each time. He helped them get promoted back to the first division. This showed his great loyalty to the club.

End of Playing Career

Nicolae Pescaru played his last top-league match on November 23, 1980. He played a total of 311 games in the top league, scoring 62 goals. This made him the player with the most appearances and goals for Steagul in that league.

After leaving Brașov, he played one more season for Șoimii IPA Sibiu in the second division. Then he retired as a player.

International Career

Nicolae Pescaru also played for the Romanian national team. He played in three friendly matches. His first game was against France.

The "Mexican Trio"

Pescaru was part of Steagul Roșu Brașov's "Mexican trio." This group included Stere Adamache and Mihai Ivăncescu. They were all part of Romania's squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Although Pescaru was in the squad, he did not play in the tournament.

For being part of the World Cup squad, he received a special award. On March 25, 2008, the President of Romania gave him "The Sportive Merit" medal.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Nicolae Pescaru became a junior coach. He also coached the senior team of Steagul Roșu Brașov during two different periods. As a coach, he led the team in 70 matches in the top league.

Personal Life

Nicolae's father was also a footballer. He played for Dinamo Brașov. His father advised young Nicolae that if he ever became a footballer, he should play for Steagul Roșu Brașov.

Nicolae Pescaru passed away on May 25, 2019, at the age of 76.
