Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nicolas-Louis de Durfort was a brave French Navy officer. He played a part in the War of American Independence, helping the American colonies gain their freedom.

Early Naval Career

Nicolas-Louis de Durfort began his journey in the French Navy on 23 March 1756. He started as a Garde-Marine, which was a bit like a young officer in training. These young officers learned all about sailing, navigation, and naval warfare.

After years of hard work and learning, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 May 1763. This meant he was now a more senior officer, ready to take on bigger responsibilities.

Commanding Ships

Durfort quickly showed his skills as a leader. In 1772, he was given command of his first ship, the Séduisant. This was a xebec, a type of sailing ship often used in the Mediterranean Sea, and it had 20 guns.

A few years later, in 1776, he took command of the Flèche. This was an 18-gun corvette, a smaller, fast warship. The Flèche was part of a larger group of ships, called a squadron, led by another important officer named Du Chaffault.

Rising Through the Ranks

Durfort continued to impress his superiors. On 4 April 1777, he earned a major promotion to Captain. This was a very important rank, as it meant he was now in charge of larger and more powerful warships.

As a Captain, he commanded the Atalante, a 26-gun frigate. Frigates were known for their speed and ability to scout and protect convoys. His ship was part of the squadron that patrolled the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

War of American Independence

The American Revolutionary War was a busy time for the French Navy. In 1780, Durfort was given command of the Scipion, a powerful ship with 74 guns. Ships with this many guns were often called "ships of the line" because they were strong enough to fight in the main battle line.

His most notable command during the war was the 80-gun ship Bourgogne. He led this mighty vessel at the Battle of Cape Henry on 16 March 1781. This was an important naval battle that helped the American and French forces gain control of the seas during the war.

Later Career

After the war, Nicolas-Louis de Durfort continued his service. On 1 May 1786, he received another high promotion to Chef de Division. This rank meant he was in charge of a whole division, or group, of ships, specifically the 7th Squadron. He continued to serve his country with dedication.
