Nikoloz (Nika) Rurua (Georgian: ნიკოლოზ (ნიკა) რურუა; 17 March 1968 – 4 December 2018) was an important Georgian politician. He served as the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia from 2008 to 2012. Before that, he was a member of the Parliament of Georgia.

Nika Rurua's Early Life and Education

Nika Rurua was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1968. His family was involved in the arts. He first studied music at the Meliton Balanchivadze Musical College. Later, he went on to study television directing at the Shota Rustaveli State University of Theater and Cinema in Tbilisi. He finished his studies there in 1993.

In 1994, Rurua moved to the United States to continue his education. He became a student at Georgia State University College of Law in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1998. He earned his law degree (Juris Doctor) from the university in 2001.

Starting His Career

After returning to Georgia, Nika Rurua began working for GEPLAC. This center focused on helping Georgia's laws match those of the European Union. He led a project there to make Georgian business laws similar to European ones.

Rurua also helped start a daily newspaper called 24 Hours (24 Saati). He worked there as a legal observer and edited the newspaper's weekly law section. In 2003, he published a book called The Law of Freedom. It was a collection of his essays and articles.

Nika Rurua's Political Journey

After the Rose Revolution in 2003, Nika Rurua became a member of the Parliament of Georgia. He joined the United National Movement party.

Working in Parliament

While in Parliament, Rurua held important roles. He was the deputy chairman of the Defence and Security Committee. He was also a member of the Legal Committee. He led the Georgian Parliament's group that worked with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Rurua helped create new laws to fight organized crime. These laws were very helpful in reducing the influence of organized crime in Georgia.

Cultural Contributions

In 2005, Rurua helped create the Museum of Soviet Occupation. This museum teaches people about Georgia's history under Soviet rule. The same year, he helped bring the remains of a Georgian national hero, Kaikhosro (Kakutsa) Cholokashvili, back to Georgia.

From 2008 to 2012, Nika Rurua served as the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia. He played a key role in many cultural projects. He was one of the people who started the Black Sea Jazz Festival in Batumi. He also helped Georgia become the official Guest of Honour at the 2018 Frankfurt Book Fair. This was a big event that showcased Georgian literature and culture to the world.

Passing Away

Nika Rurua passed away on 4 December 2018, in his apartment in Tbilisi. He was 50 years old. After his death, President Giorgi Margvelashvili said that Nika Rurua was a "very interesting person" and a "very strong person."
