Nikolai Bayev was a very talented Armenian architect and civil engineer. He was born in 1875 and lived until 1949. He designed many important buildings in cities like Baku and Yerevan. His work helped shape the look of these cities for many years.
A Life in Architecture
Nikolai Bayev was born in Astrakhan, Russia, in 1875. He loved learning and went to the Saint Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineering. He graduated from there in 1901, ready to start his career.
Building Baku
From 1911 to 1918, Bayev worked as the main architect of Baku. This was a very important job! During these years, he designed over 100 buildings in the city.
One of his most famous designs in Baku is the Great Theatre of the Mailov Brothers. Today, this building is known as the Azerbaijan State Opera Theatre. He also designed the Sabunchi Railway Station and many homes.
Moving to Yerevan
In 1927, Bayev moved to Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. From 1929 to 1930, he led a group that built many structures in the countryside. He designed about 200 buildings during this time.
Some of his notable works in Yerevan include the Pioneer's Palace. This was a special place for children to learn and play. He also designed the State Bank of Armenian SSR and the Ministry of Justice building. Other projects included the Yerevan Mechanical factory and the old hall of the Sundukyan Theatre.
In 1945, Nikolai Bayev received an Honorary Diploma. This was from the top government group in Armenia, recognizing his great work.
