Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov (Russian: Никола́й Фёдорович Мака́ров; 22 May 1914 – 13 May 1988) was a talented Soviet firearms designer. He is most famous for creating the Makarov pistol.

About Nikolay Makarov
Nikolay Makarov was born on May 22, 1914, in a village called Sasovo. His father worked on the railway. In 1936, Nikolay started studying at the Tula Mechanical Institute.
When Germany invaded the Soviet Union during World War II, Nikolay was almost finished with his studies. He quickly became an engineer and was sent to a factory that made machines. This factory later moved to a safer place.
In 1944, Makarov returned to Tula and finished his studies with excellent grades.
Designing the Makarov Pistol
In 1945, Nikolay Makarov joined a special competition. The goal was to design a new pistol for the army. The army needed to replace older pistols that had been used for a long time.
Makarov's design was very good. It even used some ideas from the Walther PP pistol. His design won the competition! In 1951, the army officially started using his pistol, which became known as the Makarov pistol.
Nikolay Makarov kept designing firearms in Tula until he retired in 1974. After retiring, he was chosen to be a member of a local council in Tula. He also joined a scientific and technological group.
Nikolay Makarov passed away on May 13, 1988, at the age of 73. He was buried in Tula.
