Nikolay Igorevich Pimenov (Russian: Николай Игорьевич Пименов; born March 29, 1958) is a famous retired rower from Russia. He is best known for competing in rowing with his twin brother, Yuriy. Together, they achieved great success in the sport, winning many medals at the Olympics and World Championships.

A Champion Rower

Nikolay Pimenov was a very successful rower. He often competed in a boat called a "coxless pair." This means two rowers work together without a coxswain (the person who steers and directs the boat). His twin brother, Yuriy, was always his partner.

Olympic Medals and Challenges

The Pimenov brothers won a silver medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. This was a huge achievement for them.

They faced a challenge in 1984. The Soviet Union, their home country, decided not to send its athletes to the Olympics that year. This meant Nikolay and Yuriy missed out on competing. Instead, they took part in the Friendship Games, where they won a gold medal.

Later, they competed in the 1988 and 1992 Games. They finished 6th in 1988 and 15th in 1992.

World Championship Success

Nikolay and Yuriy Pimenov also had amazing results at the World Rowing Championships. They won three gold medals:

  • 1981 in Munich
  • 1985 in Hazewinkel
  • 1986 in Nottingham

They also earned three silver medals:

  • 1979 in Bled
  • 1983 in Duisburg (in a "coxless four" boat)
  • 1990 in Tasmania

In 1987, they added a bronze medal to their collection in Copenhagen.

Beyond Rowing

Nikolay Pimenov's talents go beyond just rowing. He is also a recognized painter. After his rowing career, he became the head coach for the Russian junior rowing team. This shows his dedication to helping young athletes.

Highest Honor in Rowing

In 1996, Nikolay Pimenov received the Thomas Keller Medal. This is the highest honor a rower can get! It is given to rowers who have had an outstanding career and shown great sportsmanship.

Interestingly, after winning the 1985 world title, Nikolay was so exhausted that he had to go to the hospital. Because of this, he missed the award ceremony for his gold medal.
