Yuriy Igorevich Pimenov (born March 29, 1958 – died April 19, 2019) was a famous rower from Russia. He was best known for competing in a type of rowing boat called a coxless pair. In this boat, two rowers work together without a coxswain (the person who steers and gives commands). Yuriy almost always rowed with his twin brother, Nikolay.

Together, the Pimenov brothers achieved many great things in rowing. They won a silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games. They also earned several medals at the World Rowing Championships, including three gold medals.

Who Was Yuriy Pimenov?

Yuriy Pimenov was born in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He grew up to be a tall and strong athlete, perfect for rowing. He weighed about 94 kilograms (207 pounds) and was 1.96 meters (6 feet 5 inches) tall.

Rowing with His Twin Brother

Yuriy and his twin brother Nikolay were a very successful team in rowing. They competed together for many years, from 1978 to 1993. Their teamwork and skill made them one of the best rowing duos in the world.

Amazing Wins and Medals

The Pimenov brothers won many important medals during their rowing careers. Their achievements show how dedicated and talented they were.

Olympic Dreams and Challenges

In 1980, Yuriy and Nikolay won a silver medal at the Olympic Games held in Moscow. This was a huge accomplishment for them.

They were ready to compete again in the 1984 Olympics. However, the Soviet Union decided not to send its athletes to those Games. This was known as a boycott. Instead, Yuriy and Nikolay competed in the Friendship Games, which were like an alternative Olympics. They won a gold medal there.

The brothers also competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. They finished 6th in 1988 and 15th in 1992.

World Championships Success

Yuriy and Nikolay had incredible success at the World Rowing Championships. They won three gold medals:

  • In 1981 in Munich, Germany.
  • In 1985 in Hazewinkel, Belgium.
  • In 1986 in Nottingham, England.

They also won three silver medals at the World Championships:

  • In 1979 in Bled, Yugoslavia.
  • In 1983 in Duisburg, Germany (in a "coxless four" boat, with two other rowers).
  • In 1990 in Tasmania, Australia.

In 1987, they won a bronze medal in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Life After Competing

After he stopped competing, Yuriy Pimenov continued to be involved in rowing. He became an international rowing referee, which means he helped make sure races were fair. He was also the main referee for the Russian Rowing Federation.

In 1994, Yuriy received a very special award called the Thomas Keller Medal. This is the highest honor a rower can get. He was only the third person ever to receive this award, showing how respected he was in the sport.
