Nimco Ahmed is a Somali-American political activist. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A political activist works to make changes in society through government and public policy.
Nimco Ahmed's Work
Nimco Ahmed has held important roles in politics. In 2014, she became the State Director for the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL). The DFL is a major political party in Minnesota. As State Director, she helped train people through the DFL Somali Caucus. A "caucus" is a meeting where members of a political party choose candidates or decide on policies.
Helping the Community
Nimco Ahmed also works as a policy aide for the vice president of the Minneapolis City Council. This means she helps create and improve rules and plans for the city.
She also helped start two important groups:
- The Minnesota League of Young Voters
- The FATA non-profit organization
Education and Leadership
From 2009 to 2010, Ahmed was a policy fellow at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. This institute is part of the University of Minnesota. A "policy fellow" studies how government policies are made and how they affect people.
She was also chosen as one of two young "Women to Watch" by the Minnesota Women's Political Caucus. This honor highlights women who are making a difference in politics.
Besides her political work, Nimco Ahmed serves on the boards of several organizations. These include the reNEW Minnesota campaign and the Minneapolis Community Action Circle of Discipline. Being on a board means she helps guide these organizations and their important work.
