Ninotchka "Nina" García (born May 3, 1965) is a Colombian-American fashion journalist. She is the editor-in-chief of Elle magazine. Nina García is also an author and a judge on the TV show Project Runway. She has been a judge on the show since it first started.

Early Life and Education

Nina García was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her father was a successful importer. She went to the Dana Hall School in Massachusetts and finished in 1983. She then earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University.

Later, she studied at Esmod in Paris, which is a famous fashion school. In 1992, she earned another bachelor's degree. This one was in fashion merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

Nina García started her career in the fashion world in the early 1980s. She worked in public relations for fashion brands like Perry Ellis. She also worked with the designer Marc Jacobs.

Fashion Journalism

After working with Marc Jacobs, Nina García joined Mirabella magazine. She worked there as an Assistant Stylist and Market Editor. Later, she moved to Elle magazine.

In 2000, she became the Fashion Director of Elle. She left this role in April 2008 but stayed as an Editor-at-Large until August of that year. In 2012, Nina García became the creative director of Marie Claire magazine.

In September 2017, Nina García was named the editor-in-chief of Elle. This was a big moment because she was the first Latina to lead a major American fashion magazine.

Other Work and TV Appearances

Nina García's influence goes beyond just fashion magazines. She has also worked in television. She has hosted the red carpet for the ABC's Oscar telecast.

Since 2004, she has been a judge on the popular TV show Project Runway. She also shares her style advice on other TV programs. These include Good Morning America, The View, Today, and CNN.

Author and Books

Nina García is also a successful author. She has written four books about style and fashion.

  • In 2021, she received the Media Award in Honor of Eugenia Sheppard. This was for her work with ELLE magazine.
  • In 2022, USA Today honored her as one of their Women of the Year.
  • In 2023, the Carnegie Corporation of New York recognized her with a Great Immigrants Award.

Personal Life

Nina García is married to David Conrod. He is the CEO of FocusPoint Private Capital Group. They have two children and live in New York.

In February 2019, Nina García wrote an article for Elle magazine. She shared that she would not be attending Fashion Week that year. She was taking time for a health procedure to stay healthy.
