The Ningbing false antechinus (Pseudantechinus ningbing) is a small, meat-eating marsupial. It lives in the rocky areas of north-western Australia, especially in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. You might also hear it called the Ningbing pseudantechinus.

Discovering the Ningbing False Antechinus

This little marsupial was first found by Harry Butler in a place called Ningbing. Ningbing is an old station in the Kimberley region. For a long time, people thought it was just a type of fat-tailed false antechinus. But in 1988, a scientist named D. J. Kitchener realized it was a unique species. He gave it its own name. Both its common name and its scientific name honor the place where it was first found.

The Ningbing false antechinus belongs to a family of marsupials called dasyurids. This family includes many meat-eating marsupials like quolls and Tasmanian devils. The Ningbing false antechinus is closely related to other false antechinuses, especially the fat-tailed false antechinus.

What Does it Look Like?

The Ningbing false antechinus looks a lot like the fat-tailed false antechinus (Pseudantechinus macdonnellensis). But there are a few key differences. Female Ningbing false antechinuses have four teats, while the fat-tailed kind has six. The Ningbing false antechinus also has a longer tail. The base of its tail has long hairs, and the rest of the tail looks a bit scaly.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Scientists don't know a lot about the daily life of the Ningbing false antechinus. We do know that they usually mate in June. After mating, the mother carries her babies for about 45 to 52 days. The young are born in July or August. They are usually ready to stop drinking their mother's milk by October or November.

Where Do They Live?

The Ningbing false antechinus lives in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It likes to live in rocky places. You can find it in many different types of plant environments, as long as there are rocks.
